The Literacy Coalition has enjoyed engaging youth to celebrate reading in an American Girl Fashion Show for the last four years. Although American Girl is no longer offering charities the opportunity to host the show, the Literacy Coalition wants to keep in touch with our Literacy Coalition/American Girl fans and keep the excitement going. The American Girl “Book Bash” on April 8 is just one of the free celebrations of the new ReaderCorps youth reading initiative. There will be scavenger hunts, crafts and activities for participants and their dolls. There will be chances to win American Girl and Barnes & Noble giveaways. Through ReaderCorps youth can earn prizes and recognition for reading and support literacy through donations of books or pledges in our read-a-thon. The ReaderCorps mission is to provide meaningful service opportunities for children and teens that make them excited about reading while supporting literacy in Palm Beach County. We are encouraging youth to organize a book drive, read to younger children or the elderly and participate in our read-a-thon. Any child from kindergarten through twelfth grade – whether attending a traditional public school, charter school, private school or is home-schooled – can be a member of ReaderCorps. We are also looking for students to serve as the leader of the campaign at his or her school or group and be a ReaderCorps Ambassador.

ReaderCorps 2017 will conclude with a finale April 26 at a recognition ceremony.  We will honor the youth, schools and groups who have embraced the true spirit of the campaign and helped to make Palm Beach County a community that values literacy.
