Jacob Mahecha is 8-years-old and a third-grade student at Pine Jog Elementary near West Palm Beach. Four years ago, he started participating in our Budding Readers program to help him become a great reader. Today, he’s reading above grade level.
His father, Carlos Mahecha, explains how the program helped Jacob.
Jacob started to receive support from Budding Readers at age 4. He had a language delay and the Budding Readers helped him to develop his comprehension skills faster. Not only did he receive additional time, he was exposed to additional resources. The one-to-one system allowed him to build his confidence and therefore, he started to achieve his developmental goals.
In the program, my son worked with Vanessa. We are very happy and thankful to say that she made a difference in Jacob’s life. She was patient; she did a lot of research on Jacob’s language delay to work with him with the right resources. She always took extra time and she went the extra mile to support Jacob.
When Jacob first started the program, he was just beginning to read sight words. Now, I’m happy that he’s above grade level.
Looking back, if Jacob wasn’t in the program, he would probably be at grade level or below.
Budding Readers provides weekly one-to-one interactive reading sessions for three-year-old children to help them develop early literacy skills.
Father, Carlos Mahecha, served as guest speaker for the Adult Essay Contest Reception.
