Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County is Recruiting for AmeriCorps Members

 

 

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., June 25, 2020 – If you’re looking to change lives and have a meaningful impact on the community, the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County is recruiting for its Literacy AmeriCorps program. Applicants must be at least 21-years-old and it is a full-time opportunity.

The Coalition trains and supervises up to 40 AmeriCorps members who each contribute 1,700 hours of service in tutoring, mentoring and participating in community service projects. The members are placed at various service sites throughout the county where they tutor individuals or teach in small groups. Members may be assigned to:

• Family literacy centers where they work with parents and children;
• Library programs serving adults or children;
• Afterschool centers where they tutor children who are underachieving in reading;
• Adult literacy programs where they teach groups of adults who want to learn English; and
• High schools where they serve as graduation coaches for students at risk of dropping out.

Through last year’s Literacy AmeriCorps team:

• 420 adult learners were assisted with reading, English ad employability skills;
• 1,497 at-risk youth were coached, tutored and mentored for academic success;
• 126 children received tutoring and literacy enrichment to improve reading skills;
• 188 children and youth were provided with homework help.

Literacy AmeriCorps members receive a $15,225 stipend and an education award of $6,195 upon completion of the AmeriCorps service year.

A recipient of the coveted 4-star Charity Navigator rating for 11 consecutive years, the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County has worked to improve the quality of life in our community by promoting and achieving literacy. Nearly half of all third graders in Palm Beach County are not reading on grade level and according to the National Center for Education Statistics 2020 estimate, 22.2% of adults age 16 or older in the County lack basic literacy skills, meaning they are not able to read and understand short materials and fill out forms. Through extensive outreach and collaboration with a network of community partners, the Literacy Coalition strives to ensure that individuals who need to improve their literacy skills receive the help they need. By providing services to more than 29,000 adults, children and families each year, the Literacy Coalition’s goal is for every child and every adult in Palm Beach County to be able to read.
