Read for the Record Book Announced at the Literacy Coalition’s Mayor’s Literacy Initiative Luncheon

Nigel and the Moon to Be Read to Thousands of Local Children on Oct. 27

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Oct. 5, 2022 — Believing in your dreams and finding the courage to share them with others is the theme of this year’s Read for the Record book, Nigel and the Moon by Antwan Eady. The book, was announced at the annual Mayor’s Literacy Initiative Luncheon hosted by the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County. The Coalition is coordinating the Oct. 27 Read for the Record campaign locally for the 17th consecutive year.

The Coalition’s local reading initiative is part of Jumpstart’s national Read for the Record campaign. The campaign brings together millions of adults and children in classrooms, libraries, community centers, and homes across the country to read the same book on the same day.

“The goal of Read for the Record is to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child so that all children have the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed,”

said Kristin Calder, Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County CEO. “When you read a story aloud to a child, it helps bring the story to life and allows the child to comprehend more.”

Thanks to support from PNC Bank, the Literacy Coalition is distributing more than a thousand copies of Nigel and the Moon to childcare centers and schools throughout Palm Beach County to make a huge impact. The Coalition also partners with municipal leaders, businesses and hundreds of individual volunteers to read the book to children at dozens of local sites. For last year’s Read for the Record, the Coalition distributed nearly 1,200 books to childcare centers, municipal leaders and guest readers to read and share with students and children at schools and childcare centers throughout Palm Beach County. Hundreds of volunteers read to more than 26,000 children at more than 100 sites.
