BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Oct. 8, 2018 — What good can a splash of color do in a community of gray? Children throughout Palm Beach County will find out on October 25 when Read for the Record takes place. This year’s Read for the Record book is Maybe Something Beautiful by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell and illustrated by Rafael López. The colorful story shows how art transformed a neighborhood and brought its residents closer together. The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County is coordinating Read for the Record in Palm Beach County for the 13th year.

Each year as part of Jumpstart’s annual Read for the Record campaign, thousands of adults read the chosen book to children across the country on a single day. The Literacy Coalition is working locally with municipal leaders, businesses and individual volunteers to make a huge impact. Last year the Coalition coordinated 415 volunteers to read to 15,696 children in the county.

The Literacy Coalition is also hosting a Read for the Record celebration at Highland Elementary (500 Highland Ave, Lake Worth, FL 33460) from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for about 50 students of the Coalition’s after-school literacy programs. Executives from the PNC Foundation will read to the children, and the Literacy Coalition will coordinate engaging art and literacy activities inspired by the book for the children to create and take home. Reading tips and additional materials will also be given to the children to share with their family.

“Reading aloud to children through events like Read for the Record has many benefits,” says Kristin Calder, Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County CEO. “It Is heartwarming for the volunteers to see how engaged the children are in their reading and it helps bring a story to life allowing the children to comprehend more. It also helps the children develop a stronger vocabulary and increase their attention span.”
